What is a Word Counter?
A Word Counter is a text analysis tool that instantly measures the length and composition of any piece of writing. Paste or type your text and you'll immediately see word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentence count, and paragraph count, all updating in real time as you type.
Do Punctuation Marks Count as Words?
The general convention, used by Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and this tool, is simple: a word is any sequence of characters separated by spaces. Punctuation attached to a word does not add to the word count, but punctuation standing alone between spaces does count as a word.
In practice this means:
- Attached punctuation adds nothing: "Hello, world!" is 2 words. The comma and exclamation mark belong to the words they touch.
- Standalone punctuation counts as a word: a dash typed with spaces around it ("blue - green") counts as its own word, because it sits between two spaces. Written without spaces ("blue-green"), the same phrase is 1 word.
- Hyphenated words count once: "well-known" and "mother-in-law" are each 1 word.
- Abbreviations count once: "e.g." and "Dr." are each 1 word, no matter how many periods they contain.
- Numbers and dates count once: "3.14" is 1 word, "25/07/2026" is 1 word.
- Contractions count once: "don't" and "it's" are each 1 word.
This is why the same essay can show slightly different counts in different tools: the space-separation convention is universal, but edge cases like standalone dashes, slashes, and ellipses vary between counters. If you are writing against a strict limit, always confirm with the counter your examiner or publisher will actually use.

How to Check Character Count in Microsoft Word
Word shows word count in the status bar at the bottom of the window, but the character count is one step further away:
- Open the Review tab on the ribbon and click Word Count, or simply click the word count shown in the status bar at the bottom left.
- A dialog opens showing words, characters (no spaces), characters (with spaces), paragraphs, and lines.
- Tick or untick "Include textboxes, footnotes and endnotes" depending on what your limit covers.
In Google Docs, open Tools, then Word count (shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows, Cmd+Shift+C on Mac). If you only want to count part of a document, select that text first; both Word and Docs then report statistics for the selection only. How Many Characters Are in a Sentence?
There is no fixed number, but the averages are well established. English words average roughly 5 characters plus a following space, and readable sentences typically run 15 to 20 words. That puts a typical sentence at roughly 75 to 120 characters including spaces. Short punchy sentences may be under 50 characters; long academic sentences can exceed 200. Why Counts Differ Between Platforms
- Microsoft Word / Google Docs: Space-separated counting, as described above. Footnotes and text boxes may be excluded depending on settings.
- Twitter/X: Counts characters, not words, and uses weighted counting: URLs count as 23 characters regardless of length, and most emoji and CJK characters count as 2.
- SMS: 160 characters per message with the basic GSM alphabet, but a single emoji or special symbol switches the whole message to Unicode encoding and the limit drops to 70.
- Meta descriptions / SEO: Limits are really pixel widths, but roughly 155 to 160 characters is the safe zone before search engines truncate.

Understanding the Statistics
- Words: Any sequence of characters separated by spaces or line breaks (the same convention Microsoft Word uses)
