What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin used as placeholder text, so a layout can be judged before the real words are written. It looks like ordinary prose, with a natural mix of short and long words, but it carries no meaning a reader could get distracted by. Designers, developers, publishers and template makers have used it for decades to fill pages, screens and mockups.
Where does Lorem Ipsum come from?
It comes from a real book: De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written by the Roman statesman and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero in 45 BC. The standard placeholder passage is a cut up version of sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33, part of a discussion about pleasure and pain.
The original sentence reads "Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit", roughly "Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain". The familiar opening "Lorem ipsum" is a fragment of "dolorem ipsum" (pain itself) with the first syllable cut off. Words were then dropped, shortened and rearranged, which is why the result reads like Latin but is not grammatical Latin.
Lorem ipsum became widespread in the 1960s through Letraset dry transfer sheets, which printed the passage for use in layouts, and later through desktop publishing software that shipped with it as sample text. Today it is built into many design tools, website builders and theme demos.
How do I generate Lorem Ipsum text?
- Enter the number of paragraphs you need, from 1 to 20.
- Enter the words per paragraph. The field suggests 10 to 200 words.
- Click Generate Lorem Ipsum. The text appears below as separate paragraphs.
- Click Copy Text to put it on your clipboard, then paste it into your design file, HTML, CMS or document.
Each paragraph is built from a pool of 62 classic Lorem ipsum words (lorem, ipsum, dolor, sit, amet, consectetur, adipiscing, elit and so on) picked at random, so every click gives different text. Each paragraph starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop, and it contains exactly the number of words you asked for. Generation happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How much placeholder text do I need?
Match the placeholder to the length of the real content you expect, so the layout is tested honestly. These settings are a good starting point:

The words in this generator average about 5.6 letters, so with spaces each word takes up roughly 6.6 characters. A 50 word paragraph is about 330 characters and a 100 word paragraph about 660 characters, which helps when a field or design has a character limit.
When should you not use Lorem Ipsum?
Placeholder text is a tool for layout, not a replacement for thinking about content. It works well for testing type size, line length, spacing and how a template handles short and long blocks. It works less well in a few situations:
- Headlines and buttons: real labels such as "Start free trial" or a long product name behave differently from random Latin. Write draft copy for these.
- User testing: people cannot judge whether a page makes sense if they cannot read it. Use realistic draft text when testing with users.
- Translated sites: many languages run longer than English, so test with real translated strings too.
- Anything that goes live: search engines and visitors see placeholder text as a sign of an unfinished page. Search your site for "lorem" before launch.
Lorem Ipsum tips for designers and developers
- Test extremes: generate one very short paragraph (10 words) and one very long one (200 words) to see how cards and columns cope with both.
- Keep it obviously fake: Latin placeholder is easy to spot in a review, so nobody mistakes it for approved copy.
- Check the word count: paste the result into the Word Counter if you need character counts for a specific field.
