How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100: a 20% tip on a $48.50 bill is 48.50 x 0.20 = $9.70, for a total of $58.20. Type the bill into the calculator, tap 15%, 18%, 20% or 25% (or type any other percentage), and the tip amount and total update as you type. The tip starts at 18% when the page loads.
If you are splitting, enter the number of people and the tool also shows what each person pays. The last line of the breakdown repeats the math (bill plus tip at your chosen percentage), so you can check it at a glance.
How much is a 15, 18, 20 or 25% tip?
Here are the tip amounts for common bill sizes at the four quick-select percentages:

For a bill that is not in the table, scale from the nearest row: a $60 bill at 20% is $12, which is the $50 tip plus a fifth of it.
How do I work out a tip in my head?
Start with 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then build from there. On a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40.
- 20%: double the 10% figure. $6.40 x 2 = $12.80.
- 15%: add half of the 10% figure. $6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60.
- 25%: divide the bill by 4. $64 / 4 = $16.00.
- 18%: take 20% and subtract a tenth of it. $12.80 minus $1.28 = $11.52.
Mental math is fine for a quick check. When several people are splitting, or when you want the exact cents, the calculator is faster and avoids rounding mistakes.
How do I split a bill with tip between friends?
Add the tip to the bill first, then divide the total by the number of people. The calculator does it in that order. Worked example: four friends have an $86.40 dinner bill and want to leave 20%.
- Tip: 86.40 x 0.20 = $17.28
- Total: 86.40 + 17.28 = $103.68
- Per person: 103.68 / 4 = $25.92
The split is always even. Amounts are shown to the cent, so some totals do not divide perfectly: a $100.00 total split three ways shows $33.33 each, which adds up to $99.99. Have one person round up by a cent, or round everyone up to $34 and let the extra go to the server.
If people ordered very different amounts, an even split may not feel fair. In that case, run the calculator once per person with their own subtotal and the same tip percentage, and set the number of people to 1.
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the traditional method, but tipping on the total after tax is common and simpler. The difference is usually small. On a $60.00 subtotal with $4.80 in sales tax, a 20% tip is $12.00 before tax and $12.96 after tax. The calculator tips on whatever amount you enter, so type the subtotal for a pre-tax tip or the final total for a post-tax tip.
Also check the receipt for a service charge or automatic gratuity, which some restaurants add for large groups. If one is already included, you do not need to add a full tip on top.
How much should I tip?
It depends on where you are and the type of service. In the United States, around 15 to 20% is a common range for table service at a sit-down restaurant, with more for excellent service. Many other countries have lower tipping expectations, or include service in the price. Use the quick buttons as a starting point and type any other percentage when local custom calls for it, including 0% or small amounts such as 5 or 10%.
